Out with the old lino
We did have a double-glazed window fitted, but frankly, we couldn't spare that expense as the old single-glazed unit threatened to fall out every time we opened it. I lifted the beige, non-descript lino to uncover the original floorboards, which were sanded, stained and varnished. Replacing the lino is also a good option for tight budgets, and there is some gorgeous vinyl flooring out there.
Making a moodboard
I made a moodboard to help me visualize the end result. I was after a cosy and relaxed space with pinch of glam. I wanted to treat this space like I would a lounge, so I stayed away from bathroomy colours and injected a few vintage pieces and some cool wall art.
Working with what you've got
The wall tiles are white with yellow specks. Rather than fight them, I looked for a colour that would complement them. I went for Farrow and Ball India yellow. It's a deep mustard yellow that will create a moody, cosy feel. I married it with splashes of Down Pipe to continue with the gold/silver contrast in the room, it's a classic.
Thinking practical
I made some shelves out of salvaged wood to hold towels and toiletries (to see how I go about making these read 'Put a shelf up!'). The raw wood adds a natural vibe and contrast to the gold elements of the room. French soaps are kept in a shop display glass jar, while a brass candle holder and gold mirror work the vintage feel.
Cabinet update
The vintage wall cabinet had seen better days but I liked its shape and the faux-wood door. I kept it, painted it silver and added a few accessories to make it a feature.
Wall Art and plants
Hanging frames and incorporating plants create a cosy factor in any room. I'm fortunate to have a window in this bathroom so plants thrive in here but faux plants are an option for dark spaces.
VoilĂ a quick fix that makes all the difference. I love my glam, bohemian bathroom, it's such a homely and relaxing space. Next, I'll be transforming a small cabinet by dressing it in gold to add more glamour - and more toiletries - to this snug sanctuary, so watch out for updates.
